Before agricultural products and other cargo items are loaded into the hold there is a prime opportunity to fumigate the area, and it’s often required by many shipping companies. At PELIAS, our expert teams thoroughly inspect the holds, making the appropriate ULD tests when required and ensuring the holds are not going to leak once we begin the fumigation.
Fumigation tablets/pellets are the most commonly-used chemical medium for empty holds. When atmospheric moisture comes in contact with the fumigant, a reaction occurs, allowing the gas to release and fumigate all areas in the hold. Phosphine gas is the most common type used to fumigate holds.
Following our services, clients will receive a certificate from PELIAS indicating that all the required services have been rendered. This is the required documentation shipping companies need to have their cargos loaded into the newly pest-free holds.
Commodities are often shipped in freight containers, but before they go into transit, they need to be fumigated and ventilated. We begin the process with an inspection, which gives us the information we need to choose the right type of fumigant, the volume of it and make a determination of how long the commodities will need to be exposed to the chemical.
We ensure that all areas that are at risk of leaking are sealed, ensuring that the gas will circulate in the areas for a minimum exposure time. We take chemical readings to account for the amount of gas present and will make adjustments as needed throughout the process. Once we’ve determined the fumigation has been successful, we’ll remove all the plastic sheeting and/or tarps and fully aerate the areas.
There are times when the fumigation process must be undertaken while in transit, which is also called port-to-port fumigation. Beginning at the load port, the phosphine is added to the cargo and it will be active for a determined amount of time and arrive at the destination where our professionals will take charge of the degassing process. Throughout the in-transit fumigation, qualified parties on board will monitor the process and ensure efficacy during the voyage.
A major benefit of in-transit marine fumigation is that there will be no delay in the debarkation of the ship.

The depth of the commodity will determine the length of time the gas will need to be distributed. For example, 6 meters of depth usually requires 4 days of exposure, whereas depths between 12 and 20 meters can take up to 9 days. A gas recirculation system ensures that the exposure to the gas is sufficient.
PELIAS ensures that the fumigant dispersal is adequate via a recirculation fan, which safely draws fumigated air through tubes to the bottom of the stow. Without a recirculation system, gas can build up in the head space, often to dangerous levels. Therefore, we take great pains to assure the recirculation system is in working order.
