Heat treatment

Heat treatment services in The Baltic States

PELIAS provides heat treatment services that the shipping industry counts on to stay in compliance with pest control regulations. Our team of highly skilled technicians is equipped with the latest technologies and utilizes proven techniques for successfully heat treating cargoes that include wood. If you’re looking to stay in compliance with ISPM-15 rules, we’re your go-to contractor.

The process is just as effective as fumigation but takes significantly less time.

Regardless of the type of raw wood it is, ISPM-15 rules dictate that all international shipments of wood packaging must be fumigated or heat treated. Heat treatment is an effective way to kill fungus and insects before they cross borders. Pallets, wood cases, crates and dunnage, all of which are non-manufactured wood commonly used in shipping are subject to the ISPM-15 rules, which means a qualified heat treatment contractor needs to be brought in to do the job. Treated wood will be required to display a IPPC certification stamp, which also shows who treated it.

ISPM-15 regulation affects all wood packaging material, including:

  • Boxes
  • Cable drums
  • Crates
  • Dunnage
  • Packing cases
  • Pallets
  • Reels
  • Spools

Our experts carry out heat treatment using high quality mobile equipment at any time at ports throughout Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Our equipment is certified for operation in all types of environments, including the interior of potentially explosive atmospheres. This is how we guarantee safe and efficient work.

PELIAS strictly adheres to the ISPM-15 rules for all international shipments and carries out heat treatment for wood packaging seven days a week.

Wood heat treatment according to ISPM-15

ISPM-15 is an International Phytosanitary Measure developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). ISPM-15 addresses the treatment of wood materials that are greater than 6 mm and used in the shipping process.

Essentially, ISPM-15 protects ecosystems from the infestation of foreign pests and affects all wood packaging material (pallets, crates, dunnages, etc.) and requires that they be treated with heat and marked (or branded) with a seal of compliance, which is also known as the “bug stamp.”

wood heat treatment

More than 125 countries have provisions for ISPM-15, which certifies that timber used to fabricate wood crates and pallets is heat-treated and meets their regulations. Some countries require the removal of all bark before the crate is assembled. The countries requiring an ISPM-15 phytosanitary certificate can be found here.

Heat treatment is a non-chemical sanitation method used to kill pests and pathogens in wood packaging that is used in international shipments. The technique is applied to the core of the wood, which is heated to a minimum temperature of 56 degrees celsius, remaining at this temperature for at least 30 minutes. Regardless of what life stage the pests are in, heat treatment eliminates them and guarantees an insect-free result.

To ensure that the heat treatment process is completed successfully, you need to hire a contractor with proven outcomes. At PELIAS, we’re in full compliance with all matters concerning the ISPM-15 rules for international shipments. Through our years of experience and our investment in the right tools for the job, every heat treatment service we’ve offered has also passed customs regulations.

Heat treatment benefits for wood over fumigation

When given options for how to address your cargo before or during the shipping process, you have to decide between fumigation and heat treatment.

The following are reasons why you might want to choose the heat treatment option:

  • There are no environmental issues with heat treatment
  • Cargo is available the same day as treatment because the process only takes a few hours
  • Heat treated timber will weigh less than fumigated timber
  • Timber that has been heat treated lasts longer

Don’t risk non-compliance issues that can lead to costly delays or losses. Comply with the international standards for phytosanitary measures (ISPM-15) by working with PELIAS. Contact us and schedule a free consultation.

Heat treatment certificate

Before wooden products can enter a country, ISPM-15 guidelines state that heat treatment with markings are required. These phytosanitary rules ensure that the country receiving the goods will not be compromised by an invasive species.

The official IPPC mark will only be branded on wood packaging that has been successfully treated following all the guidelines. With the IPPC mark in place, there is no need for a phytosanitary certificate. However, some countries will have different levels of enforcement, requiring a Heat Treatment certification.

Should an arriving cargo be found to have not met the ISPM-15 standards, customs has the right to confiscate the cargo, send it back or destroy it. This will lead to a loss for the shipper or the consignee.

Don’t risk losing valuable cargo because it isn’t in compliance with ISPM-15 standards. Let PELIAS take care of all of your needs, including the certification. We provide the heat treatment services that meet all regulations.
