Container gas concentration measurement
Shipping containers from countries outside Europe most often contain hazardous substances, such as fumigants, pesticides, or gases in concentrations that are harmful to people upon opening. As creating a safe working environment for employees is part of the European laws, PELIAS offers services for containers that need to be tested. If gas is found to exceed specific levels, we can degas the area(s).
When the cargo contains foods, such as nuts, rice, or dried fruit (among many others), they must be fumigated prior to shipping, or in some cases, while they are being shipped. This fumigation process will ensure that pests and their eggs are destroyed. Other types of cargo that aren’t food-related are often fumigated, as well, in Baltic Sea ports when insects are detected.
At PELIAS, we utilize probes to check for fumigants. Pushed through rubber seals on the container doors, the probes are connected to monitoring devices that provide accurate readings on the gas levels.
A combination of different detection techniques combined with specialized and experienced staff provides an accurate gas measurement.
When gas levels are found to be at acceptable levels, a Gas Free Certificate will be issued. If the levels are found to be too high, the Gas Free Certificate won’t be issued until the area is ventilated, at which time the cargo can be unloaded.
