Fumigation is the process of releasing toxic gases (pesticides) into a cargo hold or compartment for the purpose of eliminating or avoiding infestation by insects or other pests that may cause the cargo to deteriorate.

Our experts can perform the necessary fumigation treatments at the points of exportation or importation. Regarding exportation, we can provide pre-shipment certification of the relevant quarantine treatment, which varies according to the destination.

Export and import commodities commonly include dry fruits, rice, grain, wheat, cocoa beans, coffee beans, corn, nuts, animal feed and nonfood commodities such as wood, cut trees, dried plants and flowers, feathers, leather products, tobacco, paper, cotton, wool and clothing. We are equipped to handle full container loads as well as loose cargo loads.

Warehouse and silo fumigation

The warehouse fumigation process begins with an inspection of the areas where the fumigation will take place, and this gives us the information we need to determine the type and amount of chemical needed to complete the job. Furthermore, our inspection informs us on how much time it will take to complete the job.

The fumigation process will be carried out in a dry warehouse with the goods raised on pallets. The cargo is covered with plastic or tarpaulin and the chemical is applied evenly over the goods.

With the cargo securely sealed, the chemical works for three to seven days, and we take readings regularly to make sure the gas is at the right levels. In some cases, the exposure to the chemical will need to surpass the usual three to seven day period due to the level of product contamination, the type of pest, humidity, ambient and product temperature.

With our silo fumigation process, instead of using gas, we utilize pellets that are composed of fumigation chemicals. We place the pellets into the cargo and the pellets undergo a chemical reaction, essentially dissolving but leaving a little residue, which is easily cleaned following the fumigation.

For clients who know they’re taking in infested cargo, we offer fumigation service while discharging into a silo. If the cargo is already in a silo, we offer fumigation during the transfer of the infested cargo into an empty silo.

Freight container fumigation

The fumigation process for freight containers differs in that the process usually begins at the loading port where the fumigation chemicals are dispersed into the container, which is immediately sealed. The sealant and any remnants of the fumigation chemical are removed once the freight container reaches its destination.

For containers that are not in transit and will remain stationary during the process, we place signs that indicate the date of fumigation, what type of fumigant was used and the estimated end date for the process.

Vessel fumigation

The method of vessel fumigation can vary depending on the needs of the client. To that end, PELIAS has the flexibility to offer the following fumigation services for a customized approach:

Fumigation of empty holds

Before a vessel’s empty hold is fumigated, the usual inspection process includes testing of the empty hold prior to loading cargo. Inspectors will determine if the area is gas tight or can be made gas tight. These services are often a requirement of shipping companies that are preparing their vessels for agricultural products.

Once we have determined the empty holds are gas tight, we will do a final inspection to ensure there are no stowaways on board and follow through with the fumigation process. Our process includes informing all relevant parties of the type and amount of fumigant being used, and the length of time it will be in use.
